Customer Story: Strategic Reset for Social Enterprise

Opportunity

A Washington nonprofit healthcare organization focused on promoting health equity looked to improve its mission impact while diversifying revenue streams and re-initiating a series of social enterprise programs. Due to the condition of the economy, and a transition of endowment funds, the client wanted to strategically operate under a different revenue generating business model and needed to conduct a business impact analysis to determine the best path forward. Adopting a new revenue model meant they could operate sustainably while enhancing the ability to deliver on their mission by leveraging brand image and existing resources.

Approach

During a period of great uncertainty for the organization, the client asked Loft9 to step in and implement programs to stop financial losses and fuel a healthy recovery. We helped bring to light challenges in fiscal management and social enterprise programs. Working closely with the client, Loft9 was able to apply a tailored approach to design and implement a successful new program and business model. Loft9 provided a baseline assessment, market opportunity research, new program feasibility study leveraging pro forma financial analysis including expected ROI, breakeven point, start-up costs. We reviewed the output with the board and then moved to implement strict controls for approving future initiatives including strategic plans that outlined how programs would align with the organization’s greater mission. Loft9 then implemented the proposed changes including partnership development, an evolved client focus, improved workflows, a new marketing plan and enhanced website capabilities.

The company’s reputation began to grow as revised leadership structure and renewed capabilities took shape. As a result, the organization looked to step back into the social enterprise space with a sense of purpose and renewed energy. Loft9 was able to provide a clear and focused strategy aligning the client’s mission and efforts while ensuring that the client was able to responsibly return focus to the social enterprise portion of the business.

The process improvements identified in the business impact analysis were approved and successfully set in motion. Tracking metrics and accountability strategies designed by Loft9 allowed the client to monitor progress and mitigate issues in-time. This was critical because the client maintained momentum and Loft9 remained a consistent and reliable partner guiding the processes of envisioning, planning and building a successful new business model. As a result of Loft9’s work, the client was able to establish an efficient method of tracking program data, assessing risk and effectiveness of the programs, while driving growth in their mission based social enterprise programs to improve health care and health equity in our community.
